The Fallen Rocks is the moniker for the all-original rock music studio project created by Mick Backsen in 2020. Now with 3 EPs and counting, The Fallen Rocks have grown to include musical contributions from many fellow musicians, all to help the cause of keeping rock and roll alive and well!

All songs by The Fallen Rocks are original compositions written by Mick. This is no AI-created soulless music – the only high tech aspect of the song writing process is his occasional use of an online rhyming dictionary. 🙂

The latest EP from The Fallen Rocks – titled “Aftermath” – represents another step in the evolution of the project. The songs continue to be primarily guitar-driven rock, with influences from the 60s to now. But while the music is intended, like any good rock music, to have grit and drive, Mick has also continued to strive for interesting melodic and musical structure. The harmony vocals provided by Mara Backsen add to the melodic complexity.

Mick also aims to craft interesting and thoughtful lyrics, creating songs that don’t always fully reveal themselves with just a casual listen. Lyrical inspiration in Fallen Rocks songs comes from esoteric topics like imposter syndrome, search and rescue operations, conspiracy theories, human failings, and apocalyptic imagery, influenced by artists like Pete Townsend of The Who and John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats.

The title song “Aftermath”, for example, is narrated by someone who is living through some unnamed and unspecified catastrophic event. The fate of the narrator is left uncertain, but the listener is left with little evidence that all could end well.

While there are no overtly political or topical songs on the EP, the listener can feel the influence of the uncertain and turbulent times in songs like “Don’t Look Now” and “Don’t Try”. Meanwhile, “Better Not Touch the Stuff”, while musically reflecting a bouncy 60’s garage rock feel, touches on the potential all of us have for succumbing to addictions small or large. As one listener commented – “I guess we all have stuff we better not touch.”

The project of The Fallen Rocks continues, with new songs already in the works! Watch for future release of singles and another EP release in 2026!
